Surrender

Other than Easter and Christmas, today is my favorite feast day in the Church calendar.  It is the feast of the Annunciation.  I like to ponder this scene in Mary’s life when the Angel Gabriel appeared to her and told her that she would bear the Son of God.  I can slip myself into Mary’s sandals and feel her fear, her surprise and her trembling.

I ask myself, if it were me that the Angel Gabriel appeared to with such awesome and overwhelming news, would I have the same humility, the same trust, and the same answer as she did?  I hope that I would be able to surrender to God’s Holy Will and give a definitive “Yes” without question.

This is something we all must work on each and every day of our lives.  Growing in holiness means getting rid of self wilfulness and embracing God’s Plan, no matter what He may be asking of us.  It should be easy to do, because we know how much God loves us.  We know that He can see all of eternity – past, present and future.  We can be assured that He has our best interests at heart.  It should be easy, but it is not.

Let us look to Mary’s example, and ask her to pray for us, that we may learn to surrender each precious moment of our time here on earth to God’s incredible, unfathomable plans.

Luke 1 : 35-38

And the angel answered and said unto her, The Holy Ghost shall come upon thee, and the power of the Highest shall overshadow thee: therefore also that holy thing which shall be born of thee shall be called the Son of God.

And, behold, thy cousin Elizabeth, she hath also conceived a son in her old age: and this is the sixth month with her, who was called barren.

For with God nothing shall be impossible.

And Mary said, Behold the handmaid of the Lord; be it unto me according to thy word. And the angel departed from her.

I am a Catholic, working wife and mother. I have three children ages 7, 14 and 21. I am extremely busy, as you can imagine. I aim each and every day to put God first in my life, to teach my children the Faith, to be a supportive spouse, keep the house in order, and do my job outside of the home well, too. That's an impossible task - without Divine intervention! Here, I hope to share my triumphs and struggles with other working moms in the same boat. I will share the tools I have discovered to making it all work - most days!
